description
The house actually consists of two smaller buildings, which are connected to each other by a two-story extension on the side and another building on the back. The property has good views of Nantucket Sound . Tucker was a well-respected member of society and played a vital role in the development of the city. The building has been listed as a memorial on the National Register of Historic Places since 1990 .
At the time of its construction, as a secular counterpart to the neighboring Martha's Vineyard Campground, the house was an important social gathering place in Oak Bluffs and gained particular fame in 1873 when the then US President Ulysses S. Grant was kicked out of a service for consuming alcohol . Tucker then took him to his property, where Grant could drink in peace. Tucker also handed him a bottle of the medicine he developed and patented, Dr. Tucker's Diaphoretic Compound Number 59 , which contained a significant amount of opium .
