The Dragon's Eye Lake ( Croatian: Zmajevo oko) is a marine lake on the Gradina peninsula near Rogoznica near Šibenik ( Croatia ). It is around 100 m from the Adriatic Sea and contains salt water . Its water level rises periodically to the rhythm of ebb and flow . The lake is about 60 m deep at its deepest point.
It was named for its shape, an oval measuring 150 m by 70 m, and for a dragon that, according to legend, is said to live in the depths of the lake. It is also speculated that it was caused by a meteorite impact , but it is far more likely that it represents a typical karst formation , i.e. a collapsed cave ( sinkhole ) that is connected to the sea.
A special feature is that the lake becomes cloudy every few years and then the entire fauna of fish, jellyfish and marine snails disappears through a connection to the open sea. Several divers have died trying to investigate this connection. After a few months, however, the lake clears up again and the old fauna returns. Scientists today suspect that complex biochemical processes in the lake cause the turbidity. However, details are not yet known.
The lake is a tourist attraction with its azure blue color and karst environment.
