Dragon Quest: The Journey of the Cursed King (Japanese ド ラ ゴ ン ク エ ス ト VIII 空 と 海 と 大地 と 呪 わ れ し 姫 君, Dragon Quest VIII Sora to Umi to Daichi to Norowareshi Himegimi , literally: " Dragon Quest VIII: The sky, the sea, the earth and the enchanted princess ”), also Dragon Quest VIII or DQ 8 for short , is a computer role-playing game that was developed by Level-5 and published by Square Enix . The game is the eighth offshoot of the Dragon Quest series and is currently available on PlayStation 2 , as well as for Android , Apple iOS and Nintendo 3DS ( Japan ). The 3DS version for North America and the PAL regions ( Europe , Australia , New Zealand etc.) was released on January 20, 2017.
It is the first game in the series to be released in countries with the PAL system and therefore does not have a number in the title there. In the United States , the game was distributed under the original name Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King and no longer under Dragon Warrior . The game uses cel shading textures for its characters and its surroundings.
Gameplay
world
In Dragon Quest VIII the player moves through a completely three-dimensional world and no longer through pre-rendered backgrounds, as in earlier games in the series. Cities and dungeons are fully integrated and no longer two-dimensional symbols on the world map.
control
The player uses the left analog stick or the digital cross to move. The right analog stick is used to pan the camera 360 ° around the hero or to view the surroundings more closely from the first-person perspective. Most of the time, the player sees his hero from a third-person perspective and no longer from a bird's eye view, as in previous games.
Combat system
In Part VIII , the fights are turn-based, as is typical for series. Similar to Final Fantasy X , the "Conditional Turn-based Battle" (CTB) system is used here. But with the difference that you can't see the order of the fighting fighters. The order of battle is based on the skill of the character.
Experience point system
As in previous Dragon Quest titles, the player can develop and improve his characters by defeating opponents and collecting items. The values are automatically increased. The player only has an influence on learning special skills.
action
The game begins with Dhoulmagus, the court jester of the Kingdom of Trodain, stealing an ancient, magical scepter and cursing the castle. The magical power of the scepter enchants King Trode into a troll, his daughter, Princess Medea, into a horse and the rest of the castle's inhabitants into plants. The only one who is not affected by this spell: a guard from Trodain, the nameless hero. The hero, King Trode and Princess Medea set out to confront Dhoulmagus and break the curse. They are supported by Yangus the bandit who was saved by the nameless hero, Jessica, a sorceress who wants to avenge her brother who was killed by Dhoulmagus and Angelo, a Knight Templar with a penchant for flirting and gambling. You follow Dhoulmagus west, cross the ocean and defeat him in a dungeon. Jessica takes the scepter and disappears after a short time. When the three friends saved Jessica again, Jessica explains what happened. She said she was controlled by a prince of darkness named Rhapthorne and charged with killing the heirs of the seven wise men. When the four friends are looking for the scepter, Dominico's dog, Sir Leopold, has the scepter. In the course of the story the dark prince is freed from the scepter, but can be defeated in the final battle.
