The Dreamagon is a special soft-focus lens for small picture - SLR , which develops from the photographer Juergen Seibold, on the photokina introduced in 1998 and the Dreamagon Graphics Photo-distribution company from Brilon was distributed to approximately of 2004. It should give the pictures a "dreamy" effect. Probably only a few thousand of them were built, because the embossed serial numbers of the lenses are four-digit with leading zeros.

Surname

The artificial word Dreamagon combines the English word legend (for dream) called Imagon , alluding both onomatopoeic and content to the Blur lenses Rodenstock Imagon series on.

Physical Properties

The Dreamagon is mostly made of metal and weighs 245 g. It has a fixed focal length of 90 mm and is manually focused between 0.8 m and infinity . The focus ring has an adjustment range of approx. 1/3 turn. The lens is provided with a T-2 connection. Thus it can be used with most systems via an adapter .

The Dreamagon has a special slit segment aperture , which can be continuously adjusted between the f-stops 4 and 11 using a manual aperture ring . This locks in at whole aperture values.

Imaging properties / characteristics

The "dreamy" resp. impressionistic effect is achieved through targeted alienation. The Dreamagon adds deliberate aberrations , which are expressed, for example, in the form of light trails. In this way, you may be able to recognize the shape of the aperture in the image, especially at high-contrast transitions.

The intensity of the effect can be influenced via the aperture. The wider the aperture, the stronger the effect.

In light areas of the image, the image becomes "milky" (low-contrast), whereas the lens displays rather hard (high-contrast) in darker areas. The color rendering is rather intense.

Soft focus lenses are traditionally used for flattering portraits or subjective landscape shots. However, the effect is also suitable for, for example, still lifes and many other types of images.

prehistory

Before the realization of the Dreamagon 4/90 mm for the 35mm format , there was a prototype for the 4 "× 5" format with a focal length of 210 mm.

Curiosities

The sales company called a "Dreamagon Club" into being, which was limited to a maximum of 50 members. The members were able to "buy in" the club with a contribution of 1500 DM and were then given one of the specimens from the pool of the first 50 Dreamagon lenses, which they would have to return if they left the club later and for a specimen from the normal one Have to replace series. This measure is also strange because some of these specimens appeared as new on the eBay online auction platform around 2004 and were sold there for around 150 euros without any reference to the club.
