The Trinity Cathedral ( Russian Собор Троицы Живоначальной , abbreviated Троицкий собор) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral located in Magadan and the bishopric of the Magadan and Sinegorsk Eparchy .

history

Even in the Soviet era, in 1989, a competition for the design of a Russian Orthodox cathedral was held in Magadan . Thirteen designs were submitted, of which the design by the architect couple Vladimir and Lyudmila Kolosov was awarded the medal for the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Russia by the Moscow Patriarchate . Then the collapse of the Soviet Union began, with the deterioration of the economic situation in the Far East of Russia, a long pause began in the implementation of the project.

The implementation of the project began at the beginning of the 21st century. It was decided to build the cathedral on Lenin Square, on the bank of the Magadanka River, in place of the House of Trade Unions. This was under construction from 1979 to 1985, after which the construction program was canceled and the building remained unfinished. In 2001 it was largely demolished and on its foundation, using its metal skeleton, the construction of the cathedral began. On September 14, 2003, the first liturgy was celebrated in the still unfinished cathedral . In 2008 the building was completed. Until 2010 masters from Palech painted the interior of the cathedral. The iconostasis with a height of 18 meters was created by masters from Sofrino and Troize-Sergijewa Lavra .

In total, the construction cost nearly 900 million rubles, a third of which was raised by donations from the population. In the course of the construction process, Lenin Square was renamed Sobornaya Square (“Cathedral Square”), a Lenin monument was dismantled. Instead, on July 2, 2015, a monument to Innokenti of Moscow was inaugurated.

On September 1, 2011, the cathedral was consecrated by Patriarch Kyrill I.
