The Holy Trinity Church in Nikitniki ( Russian Храм Святой Троицы в Никитниках ) is in the Moscow district Kitai Gorod location Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century.

history

The church was named after the Moscow merchant Grigory Nikitnikov, who probably came from Yaroslavl and became rich through trading in salt and fish . He had the church built around 1630 on the site of his trading yard in place of a previous building that had burned down. The church suffered from street fighting during the revolutionary era in 1917. In 1920 it was closed, restored and converted into a branch of the History Museum. After the end of the Soviet Union, it was reopened for worship.

architecture

The Dreifaltigkeitskirche is kept in a small, richly ornamented and intensely colored style. The bell tower rises on a limestone base above the portal front, behind it the high, cubic main structure of the church, which is vaulted by countless arches in the Kokoshnik style and carries a main and four side towers with onion domes . The wall surfaces are kept in red and white and contrast with the green onion roofs with golden crosses.

Interior

Inside the church there are two side chapels on either side of the main nave, the northern one is dedicated to St. Nicholas , the southern one dedicated to St. Martyr dedicated to Nikita . The latter also served as a burial place for the founder, his children and grandchildren. In the interior there are wall and dome frescoes from the middle of the 17th century. The icons that have been preserved in the gilded wooden iconostasis are of particular importance . They are attributed to the head of the icon workshop of the Kremlin armory Simon Fyodorowitsch Ushakow and his environment.
