Mammillaria compressa is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet compressa means 'compressed, crowded'.

Mammillaria compressa , initially occurring individually, the species spreads out in a grass-like manner. The gray-green plant bodies are spherical to club-like and white wool in the apex and are 15 to 20 centimeters long and 5 to 8 centimeters in diameter. They have rhombic, sometimes square-edged warts with a length of up to 10 millimeters and a width of up to 8 millimeters. The axillae have white bristles and are densely white woolly. The 4 to 6 radial spines are 2 to 7 inches long and chalky white with brownish tips (some are shorter). Central spines are absent.

The small, bell-shaped flowers , only 1 to 1.5 centimeters in size, are light pink to purple in color. The round shaped fruits are bright red. The seeds are brown.

Mammillaria compressa

Mammillaria compressa is native to the Mexican states of Guanajuato , Querétaro , Hidalgo , Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosí and occurs at altitudes between 850 and 2240 meters.

The first description was in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria compressa subsp. compressa :
    Usually forming large pads; Central spines always absent.
  • Mammillaria compressa subsp. centralifera (Repp.) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1987 by Werner Reppenhagen as Mammillaria centralifera David Richard Hunt presented the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria compressa . Often occurring singly; Central spines mostly present.
