Dreikönigenhaus Krefeld

The Dreikönigenhaus in Krefeld is the community center of the old Catholic parish Appearance of Christ .

Because of the strong ecumenical commitment of the Old Catholic Church, it is likely to be one of the very few Catholic community centers in Europe that, among other things, housed a Protestant retirement home (1995 to 2016). The home was sponsored by the Protestant Neukirchen Educational Association . The retirement and nursing home was relocated to a suburb of Krefeld in 2016. Instead, since 2017 there have been numerous offers of the Diakonisches Werk of the Evangelical Church in the area of advice and support for people of all generations.

The construction of the Dreikönigenhaus began with the construction of the Christ Church and a parsonage in 1894. After the destruction of large parts of the Krefeld city center in World War II , the Old Catholic community built the first main wing of the center on the land next to the parish church on Dreikönigenstrasse from 1957 to 1959 .

A concept was to be implemented here that had never existed in Germany before. In ecumenical cooperation, a combination of church, community hall, old people's and nursing home, the first senior day care center in the Federal Republic (under the sponsoring association Krefelder Familienhilfe) and a Diakoniestation for outpatient care of old and sick people in the city center was created.

The community center was expanded considerably in 1989 and 1999 with a second main wing on Luisenstrasse and in 2006 with a third wing on Ostwall. After a fundamental architectural redesign, the Christ Church was consecrated on Epiphany 1997 and has been called the Appearance of Christ ever since .
