Third page

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The so-called third page , often also called a letter of motivation , is used in the context of an application to name special aspects of the résumé that could only be described unsatisfactorily in the application letter. It is recommended to use the third page if certain elements require particular explanation, e.g. why a theoretical topic was dealt with instead of a practical one as part of a doctorate , or if special circumstances justify an excessively long course of study.

The third side has its origins in the USA . Its introduction in Germany goes back to a recommendation in the advice literature by Hesse and Schrader .

Recently there have been reports that those responsible for hiring are increasingly using the Internet to obtain additional information about their applicants. A corresponding survey comes, for example, from Wirtschaftswoche and the Federal Association of German Management Consultants . If, in this context, incorrect data or data in need of explanation circulate on the Internet about the applicant , the third party can be a suitable instrument to counter this aggressively.

The third page can also be used to explain an unsteady career, or if the applicant has such a wealth of experience that the scope of the résumé would go beyond the scope of the curriculum vitae. This can be the case, for example, at an advanced age or with management experience.

The peculiarity of the third party, that additional information can be adequately presented, also causes its weakness. It is not advisable to use the third page to list matters that could have been appropriately presented in the cover letter or résumé. It is also sometimes recommended to use the third page to describe the motivation . However, according to the general opinion, the motivation can and should be the subject of the letter. We always advise against redundancies in the context of the application process.

Differentiation from letters of motivation within the framework of study programs

Today is also required of students in various study programs in the application process, the motivation for studying in a so-called letter of motivation show. However, these letters of motivation have nothing in common with third-party sites in the field of job applications. For example, letters of motivation for artistic , humanities or journalistic programs are required; The letter of motivation is a frequently used selection tool, particularly when applying for a master’s degree. When applying for a semester abroad, students are increasingly asked for letters of motivation. Letters of motivation can also be requested if you are applying for an apprenticeship position, be it professional or hobby, for which there are only a limited number of free places or for which it is mainly decided after this letter who is allowed to participate in this program.
