Druid's Altar (Clooncoe)

Druid's altar

The Druid's Altar (also called Clooncoe Cist ; Irish Cloch an Draoi , German  " Druid's Stone" ) is located in a forest about 4.7 km south of Mohill, on the grounds of Lough Rynn Castle, on the east bank of Lough Rynn ( Irish Claonloch ) in the townland of Clooncoe ( Irish Cluain Cú ) in County Leitrim in Ireland .

On Druid's Hill , between Lough Errew and Lough Rynn, there is a prehistoric structure shaped like a chair, which probably represents a collapsed portal tomb . The hidden megalithic monument , known as the cromlech , dolmen or stone box from the Bronze Age , has long been forgotten due to its location on private property (the lands of Lough Rynn Castle , a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel).

The large capstone is 1.8 meters long and may originally have stood upright. Below the horizontal slab there are some low stones that support the structure and form a small stone box , which is why the facility is described as a box. On the east side there is another massive plate (the back of the chair), inclined slightly outwards. It is 2.2 meters high, 1.3 meters wide and about 0.30 meters thick. Their upper edge is rounded.
