Cribroheros is a genus of Central American cichlids . The genus occurs from western Panama to southern Mexico on both the Caribbean and the Pacific side of the Central American land bridge. Cribroheros species feed by ingesting sand or mud with their mouths, chewing it through, sifting out small organisms and then expelling the chewed substrate. The scientific name of the species ( Lt : Crībrum = sieve + hero )indicates this diet.

features

Cribroheros species have a special head anatomy that is adapted to their nutrition strategy and a trunk that only shows original ( plesiomorphic ) characteristics. The lower head region is oriented horizontally, the mouth protrudes conspicuously. The pre-orbital region of the skull (area in front of the eye socket (orbit)) rises steadily from the mouth to the eye, the lacrimale (a skull bone that is analogous to the mammalian tear bone ) is high. The mouth is covered with small, needle-like teeth that are close together and hardly increase in size in the direction of the symphysis . Cribroheros differs from the genus Thorichthys , which has the same nutrition strategy and head shape, in the lack of a spot on the gill covers and in the plesiomorphic trunk anatomy. In contrast to most other Central American cichlids, Cribroheros species only have two dark bands on the sides of the body ( vs. three).

Systematics

The genus Cribroheros was only introduced in April 2016 by a team of Czech ichthyologists . Before, the species of the genus belonged to Amphilophus (and before that to Cichlasoma ) and together with Astatheros macracanthus , Darienheros calobrensis and Wajpamheros nourissati formed the Amphilophus macracanthus species group.

species

There are currently eight species in the genus:
