Drumtochty Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Drumtochty Castle is a neo-Gothic , with battlements provided Landhaus 3 km northwest of Auchenblae in the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire . The country house, built in 1812, stands on the southern edge of the Drumtochty Forest .

The country house was designed by James Gillespie Graham and expanded around 1815. Although Graham was commissioned to plan the extensions again, the work was carried out by the city of Aberdeen architect , John Smith . Miller speculates that he may have had an argument with George Drummond , the owner, but suggests that Smith's office closer to the site may have played a bigger role. Graham was also involved in other additions around 1839.

During the Second World War , the Norwegian government-in-exile bought Drumtochty Castle and used it as a boarding school for Norwegian children who had to flee from the German occupation of their home country .

On May 1, 1947, Robert and Elizabeth Langlands opened a boys' school in the country house after buying it from the Norwegian government. The school closed in 1971.

Historic Scotland has listed Drumtochty Castle as a Category A Historic Building since August 1972.
