Sheikh Jabir I ( Arabic جابر بن عبد الله الصباح, DMG Ǧābir bin ʿAbdallāh aṣ-Ṣabāḥ , also known as Jabir bin Abdallah as-Sabah or Jabir al-Aish ; other common transcriptions of "Jabir" are Jaber and Djabir ; * 1772 ; † 1859 ) was the third ruler of the royal Kuwaiti Al-Sabah dynasty. He ruled from 1814 to 1859 and was the eldest son of Abdullah bin Sabah .

The politically most important act of Jabir I happened when the British asked him to allow them to convert Kuwait into a protectorate . The emir refused and ensured that Kuwait would remain an independent state.

He was nicknamed Jabir al-Aish because he was said to have given the poor generously with rice and bread .
