The Junūd al-Shām ( Arabic جنود الشام, DMG Ǧunūd aš-Šām  , 'Soldiers of the Levant ') are an Islamist - jihadist group of Chechen and Lebanese Sunni fighters who are fighting on the side of the insurgents in the Syrian civil war . Allies of the Junūd al-Shām include the Ahrar al-Sham and the Al-Nusra Front , and the group is also under the command of the Islamic Front .
