The Dubai Air Show has grown from 200 exhibitors and 25 aircraft on display in 1989 to 550 exhibitors and 85 exhibits in 2003 and is considered the fastest growing air show in the world. In 2007 there were over 45,000 trade visitors from over 100 countries.

At the fair, civil and military aircraft manufacturers and suppliers (including Airbus , Boeing , Embraer and Bombardier in recent years ) try to strengthen their reputation in the Gulf region . This market is important for manufacturers because it has great development potential as a tourist and business location and many well-known companies that have placed large orders in recent years are based in the region. The Gulf region, with its relatively rich countries, is also an important market for the military sector.

In addition, the locations in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar form an important hub between Europe and Asia, consequently the airports located here are becoming more and more important as transfer points, together with the internationally important airlines based here, including Emirates , Etihad , Qatar Airways and Gulf Air belong.

This potential is demonstrated, among other things, by the fact that Dubai is busy replacing the already completely overwhelmed Dubai International Airport with a gigantic new building in the Jebel Ali Free Zone . The final completion of the 140 square kilometer area, now known as Dubai World Central Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), is planned for the period after 2020. At this point in time, DWC will be the largest airport in the world with five extra-long runways. The Dubai Air Show has therefore been taking place in the partially developed DWC area since 2011.

In addition to the usual flight demonstrations of all kinds of combat aircraft, the Airbus A380 and various helicopters, aerobatic teams such as the Frecce Tricolori , Red Arrows and the Patrouille de France can also be seen. Since the air show took place at Dubai International Airport until 2009 , regular flight operations from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time were completely suspended for the period of the flight demonstrations in 2009. The show was only interrupted for a small 15-minute departure window for 12-18 Emirates flights .
