dublinbikes ( spelling today: Coca-Cola Zero dublinbikes) is a public bike rental system in the Irish capital Dublin . Like other bicycle rental systems, such as that of the  Deutsche Bahn  ( Call-a-Bike ), dublinbikes has fixed stations throughout the city.

history

The establishment and regulation was decided by the Dubin City Council in 2006 and an agreement was then reached with the French joint stock company JCDecaux . JCDecaux signs a contract with the City of Dublin, in which JCD received 72 free advertising spaces around Dublin and in return, the 15-year contract, JCD takes over the financing of the Dublinbikes bicycle rental project. In 2009, the first 450 bicycle parking spaces were set up at 40 locations in Dublin. By May 2011, two million bike rentals had already been registered and the system expanded to 550 bikes and another 47 stations. In April 2013 the network already had 102 stations in the city.

At the end of June 2014, the dublinbikes brand was renamed “Coca-Cola Zero dublinbikes” and the Coca-Cola Zero brand took over the investments for the further expansion of the stations and bikes. The wheels then bear the Coca-Cola advertising lettering.

Vehicle fleet

The sturdy bicycles are manufactured by the French bicycle company Mercier . They are three-speed bicycles with Shimano hub gears that are shifted using a twist grip on the right-hand side of the handlebar. A hub dynamo in the front wheel generates the power for the front and rear wheel LED lighting . Other components of the rental bikes are an anti-theft device, an adjustable padded saddle as well as a front bike basket, a side stand and a bell. A fleet of transport vehicles ensures that the bikes are distributed between empty and full stations. Maintenance and repairs are carried out by JCDecaux contract partners.

The user is given the code for the combination lock of the desired bike to borrow . The bike can also be locked with this code while it is in use.
