The Dudhsagar Falls ( English Dudhsagar Falls ) are the waterfalls of the Mandovi River in the Indian state of Goa . They are located in the South Goa district in the Taluka Dharbandora not far from the border with the state of Karnataka . The waterfalls have a total height of 310 meters, they consist of several steps and form pools . The width is approx. 30 meters. The amount of water fluctuates very strongly, during the monsoon rains from June to September the falls are particularly watery and from March to June correspondingly arid.

location

The waterfalls are located in the mountain range of the Western Ghats . They are located in the Bhagwan Mahavir Wild Life Sanctuary just a few kilometers from Collem . The road distance to Goa's capital Panaji is 60 km. A special feature is the single-track railway line Margao - Belgaum , which meanders with many bends from the coast into the Dekkan highlands and crosses the Dudhsagar waterfalls in the lower third on a stone bridge. The bridge is a popular location for photo and film shoots. The good accessibility by train also promotes tourism. The surrounding park has a variety of plants and animals and also attracts many visitors.

Legend

In the local Konkani language , the name Dudhsagar means "milk lake". According to the legend, the daughter of a powerful king who had his palace nearby often bathed in the lake at the foot of the falls. After the bath, she usually drank a mug of sweetened milk. One day she was surprised by a young prince. To cover herself up, she poured the milk around herself like a curtain, while the maid quickly got her clothes. The milk is reminiscent of the spray and foam of the waterfalls during the monsoon season.
