Duffy Square with the Father Duffy memorial

The Duffy Square is a place on the northern triangle of Times Square in New York between 45th Street, 47th Street, Broadway and Seventh Avenue. It is a tourist attraction and also the location of the TKTS company, which offers discounted theater and musical tickets.

history

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Lowes Lane connected Bloomingdale Road with Eastern Post Road. The west end of the street is what is now Duffy Square, with Third Avenue and 42nd Street to the east . Lowes Lane and Eastern Post Road disappeared in the late 19th century; Bloomingdale Road survived under the name Broadway .

Initially, Duffy Square was dominated by the 15-meter-high and eight-ton plaster statue entitled "Purity (Defeat of Slander)", which was designed in 1909 by Leo Lentelli . Now the square has two statues, one in the north that represents the namesake of the square, Chaplain Francis P. Duffy of the 69th Infantry Regiment , and one in the south with the depiction of the composer, playwright and actor George M. Cohan by the sculptor Georg J. Lober .

The square and the statue of Father Duffy were inaugurated on May 2, 1937 by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia . The monument and square were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 under the name "Father Francis D. Duffy Statue and Duffy Square" .
