description

The dun was built with the straight side on the edge of the cliff and arched around an area of about 13.0 by 10.0 meters. The land side of the hill is bounded by sloping cliffs, except to the southeast where a gap was used for an outer gate. The structure was built on the rock surface. It has a rudimentary cavity wall. Access to a for Broch characteristic guard cell ( English guard cell ) is well preserved. An intramural gallery suggests that the dun had the tall, hollow wall of the brochs. There are two entrances to the wall gallery, one of which is in a place where the gallery expanded to accommodate a staircase, but of which no traces have been preserved. The height of the wall on the cliff is about 1.8 m, it then rises a little. An outer wall runs around the dun on the land side at the edge of the hill.

Dun Ardtreck was excavated by Euan W. MacKie in 1964-65 to study the evolution of the Brochs. The wall was placed on a roughly leveled platform. Charcoal from the platform was dated 115 BC. Dated. The first phase of use seems to have been short and ended with destruction by fire. The second phase has been dated to the middle of the 2nd century AD using pottery. Finds from this period include iron tools, bronze ornaments, glass ring heads and pottery wheels, as well as shards of Roman terra sigillata and a piece of a Roman pearl .
