description
Great Bernera ( Scottish Gaelic Beàrnaraigh ) is an island full of rocky knolls and dark lochs (lakes) accessible via a bridge from Lewis. There are on the island, just above the bridge, four menhirs ( English Standing stones ). Dun Bharabhat on Bernera is a typical island tun in an inland lake with an approximately 30 m long connecting dam to the shore. The Iron Age Broch has been preserved up to a height of three meters. Inside the wall is a gallery and the protruding ledge on the inside of the wall is said to have supported a wooden upper floor. The entrance to Iselduns is usually on the opposite side of the causeway. Here this original structure is partially overlaid by a later, perhaps medieval building.
