Dun Borranais

Dun Borranais ( Scottish Gaelic Dun Chuithaich ) is a broch on Lewis and Harris , about 5.0 kilometers west of the Broch Dun Bharabhat . Brochs with the name Dun ( Dun Cuier , Dun Dornaigil , Dùn Mòr , Dun Ringill or Dun an Sticir ), which are otherwise used for lower stone buildings, are common in western Scotland .

Dun Borranais is located on a small tidal island at the eastern end of the vast expanse of sand of the Uig Sands ( Scottish Gaelic Tràigh Ùige ). The location is spectacular even if Hebridean standards are applied. The outer wall of the Iron Age Broch is still clearly visible. The access was likely to be in the northwest. The structure measures approximately 15.0 x 13.0 m and could be D-shaped. The interior was later modified by building two shelters against the north and south walls. If the island is briefly surrounded by water during high tide, access is possible via a dam formed by large stepping stones.
