Dundas [ ˈdʌndəs ] is a suburb of Hamilton , Ontario in Canada .

From 1848 to 2001 Dundas was an independent small town, on January 1, 2001, after decades of political conflict, it became part of the City of Hamilton along with other smaller towns .

history

The city was founded in 1848. Her name was chosen by John Graves Simcoe , Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada after his friend Henry Dundas , the first Viscount Melville, a Scottish lawyer and politician.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Dundas enjoyed economic prosperity as it was linked to Lake Ontario by the Desjardins Canal . Only later did Hamilton replace Dundas in its role as the most economically important city in the area.

The city has a remarkable architecture from the beginning of the 20th century, which has served as a backdrop for film and television recordings several times.

Every year on the third weekend in August, the Dundas Cactus Festival takes place with concerts, a parade and gambling for charitable purposes.
