Distribution and occurrence

The species is distributed from southern Europe through central Europe and further north to the North and Baltic Seas . Individual observations are available from Great Britain , Denmark , Finland and the Baltic States that were interpreted as immigrants. In Asia, the dark green lichen owl has been reported from Asia Minor , the Caucasus , Turkmenistan, and Iraq . This information requires confirmation, as confusion with similar species cannot be ruled out. The dark green lichen owl prefers to live in deciduous and mixed forests, settlement areas, on orchards and generally in areas that contain hardwoods with abundant lichen growth.

Way of life

The moths are nocturnal and live very hidden. They sit on tree trunks overgrown with lichen , where they can hardly be seen by predators due to their camouflage color. The caterpillars feed on lichens on deciduous and fruit trees and are particularly found on old oaks.

Flight and caterpillar times

The moths fly from July to August. The caterpillars can be found from September. These overwinter and pupate in June of the following year.
