The Dunklhof (formerly Stippelhof) in the Steyr district of Steyrdorf , Kirchengasse 16, Upper Austria , is an important late Gothic town house with an arcade courtyard from the Renaissance .

History and architecture

The oldest part of the house dates from the 15th century and was the seat of the lower courts . The pronounced cantilever facade facing Kirchengasse is striking (the upper floor protrudes from the ground floor). The arcade courtyard dates from around 1520/25 and shows decorated columns and corner pillars decorated with tracery ornamentation. A renovation took place in 1996, in the course of which, as far as possible, an original appearance was restored, for example through mortared ridges, ridges and barley connections and the reuse of old hand-cut roof tiles in the arcade courtyard. New tiles, so-called church beavers , were used on the roof surfaces facing away from the side . The facade facing Kirchengasse was renovated in 2006. Today’s yellow paint comes from that time.

The owners since 1834 were Christian Brittinger , who also set up a pharmacy for the first time, from 1867 Alfred Brittinger , from 1885 Karl Arazim , 1891 Heinrich Lang , 1894 Mathilde Stippl (Anton Stippl) , from 1910 Otto Dunkl and finally his son, the architect Heinrich Dunkl , who used the house as a partial inheritance privately and professionally. In October 1958 he married the poet Waltraut Oberleitner-Schottenloher, who soon published under the name Dora Dunkl . On July 29, 1959, they invited for the first time to an "evening music in the Dunklhof". As an annual "serenade evening", this event continued until her death.

Today the courtyard is still a residential building, but is also used for events. For a long time the Heilige Geist Apotheke , the oldest pharmacy in Steyr, was located there (the sign still reminds of this). Since the drugstore, under pharmacist Mag. Grasler, moved about 500 m further to Wieserfeldplatz in 2001 due to lack of space and a “bad economic location”, the former shop is used as a gallery by various artists.

reception

The Dunklhof is the most interesting arcade courtyard in the city. Dora Dunkl wrote in Steyr in 1972 . The proud city of the ironmen :

“There are many of these arcaded courtyards, simple and precious. I was lucky enough to live in the most beautiful arcade courtyard in Steyr, and I am writing these lines, a beamed ceiling above me that has turned a dark golden brown over the course of 500 years. The edges of the window reveals are wavy, are as alive as the walls, centuries have laid layer upon layer, and everything is still as it was, in the courtyard the stone pillars, lovingly carved, ornaments full of fantasy, strong pillars, graceful pillars, steep roofs, wilder Wine that reaches into the house through the window bars and in which the sparrows sleep in summer after they have moved to their regular seats amid loud nagging.
