Steyrdorf
Steyrdorf is a district of the Upper Austrian city of Steyr . Steyrdorf is a historical, architectural and monument protection area of the old town.
Geography and history
Steyrdorf borders the inner city, Alter Tabor , Stein, Gründberg, Christkindl and Wehrgraben districts . The core concentrates on the area between Gleinker Gasse and Sierninger Straße. The largest square in the district is Wieserfeldplatz. This used to be the scene of a particularly lively market . In 1909 there were even plans to build a train station for the planned connecting line between St. Florian and Steyr. Today there is a two-storey underground car park on Wieserfeldplatz with capacity for around 250 cars, which is primarily intended as a parking space for residents. The former handicraft and trading district has become a residential area. The numerous shops and small businesses that were typical for this place in the 20th century, however, only exist in small numbers. The special thing about Steyrdorf is the unusually extensive coherent old house stock that goes back to the Middle Ages.
The Marian column on Wieserfeldplatz is also called the knife cross . Until 1848 this stood at the cemetery stairs next to Gleinkergasse.
