Duns Castle

Duns Castle is a castle in the Scottish Lowlands . It is near the village of Duns in Berwickshire in the Scottish Borders .

history

Originally, a castle built in the 14th century stood on the site of today's castle . This was owned by the Earl of Moray until the 17th century , but was sold to William Hay of Drummlezier in 1696 . Since then, Duns Castle has been the residence of the Hay family , who expanded the complex several times over the centuries. The traveler and antique dealer Robert Hay was born here in 1799 . The current castle is a building from the years 1818 to 1822. It was designed by the Scottish architect James Gillespie Graham in the Scottish Gothic Style , the Scottish variant of the Gothic Revival. From the medieval castle, only a residential tower remains , which Graham integrated into the neo-Gothic building. During the renovation, window openings that were not originally in the tower were broken.

Duns Castle today

Duns Castle is now owned by the current Laird (Scottish title, roughly equivalent to landlord ), Alexander Hay of Duns and Drummlezier , a retired accountant who also lives in the castle with his wife. However, the property can be rented for weddings, receptions or as a backdrop for filming. The park surrounding the castle is also open to the public. Inside the castle there are several rooms that extend over two floors, so that they reach a ceiling height of over 8 meters. The castle is surrounded by very extensive grounds, which are also owned by the Hay family. There is a chapel and an estate on the site, both of which belong to the property.
