Dunster is a village on the coast of the English county of Somerset , between the foothills of Exmoor National Park , and probably one of the largest and best-preserved medieval villages in England. The village is dominated by Dunster Castle , which has a history of around 1000 years.

history

The village received its charter, Reginald de Mohun, shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066. During the 12th century, Dunster flourished as a trading port known as Dunster Haven. Today the village is no longer on the coast. With the retreat of the sea, Dunster's economy changed to the wool trade. In the center is therefore the Yarn Market , an octagonal building that was built in 1609 to protect traders and their goods from the weather. It was rebuilt in 1649 after being damaged during the Civil War. Dunster is dominated by the castle that has existed since Norman times. The gatehouse from the 13th century has survived to this day. The current main building was redesigned from 1868 to 1872 by Anthony Salvin for the Luttrell family, who lived there for over 600 years. In 1976 the castle and most of its contents were given to the National Trust.

Attractions

Below the castle is St. George's Cathedral, which dates from the early 15th century and has a particularly finely crafted Latvian . A watermill that still works today has been preserved from the Middle Ages. There is also a medieval bridge over the Avill River.
