history

In 1588, James Durham obtained the rights to the Duntarvie lands. On this he had Duntarvie Castle built probably around 1590. An annex was added in the 17th century. The Hopes family later acquired the property and attached it to their northern Hopetoun House . The building has been empty since the 1840s and gradually fell into disrepair.

description

Duntarvie is about two kilometers north of Winchburgh off the M9 . The four-story, elongated main building was originally constructed symmetrically. Only the five-story tower that was added later broke the symmetry. The masonry is made of quarry stone . A stair tower emerges on the north side. Today the masonry is partially damaged and the roof destroyed. The gables are made as a stepped gable . Vaulted ceilings have been drawn in on the ground floor . From there a staircase leads to the hall on the upper floor.
