The corrugation

Through is a story by the Austrian writer Peter Rosegger , which appeared in the October and November 1895 issue (20th year) of the Graz Heimgarten .

Frame narration

When the narrator once climbed the Riffl at a young age and perhaps wanted to continue on towards Italy from there, things couldn't go any further in the Schrick gorges. The chamois hunter Anton Ruster, son of a large farmer from Upper Carinthia , had taken the completely soaked climber from the gorge into his little shelter. After the clothes had been dried, the narrator wanted to go back to the Taufenbachtal despite his longing for Italy. Instead, Anton Ruster had led the narrator further and further up through the ice and uttered the eponymous word: “The young man has to go through. He must take the mountains. For the ancients, the flat is Welsch country still good ... man must of old had found the boy favor and was down followed the invitation of the chamois hunter in the hunting lodge by. "On such sayings. During a foray through the area around the hunting lodge, the chamois hunter gave the narrator his life story as an example of having to get through:

Internal narration

Anton Ruster lost his mother early. When he, now 24 years old, had completed his three years of military service and came home, he found out that his father had perished in Eisenhammerbach. Anton's guardian, cousin Wend, ran the estate. The latter persuaded the soldier to use the Ausgedinghäusel as a domicile. Weaned from the peasant class among soldiers, Anton accepted the offer. After all, he had his livelihood thanks to the annual financial donation from his cousin Wend, and he didn't have to work hard, but could ride his hobby horse, fishing . That changed after Anton met and fell in love with little Ottel, a waitress at the street landlord. Now Anton wants to take over his farm. Cousin Wend advises against taking care of little Ottel generously as a future farmer on the Rusterhofe and placing her under his special protection.

Rosegger writes that while the angler exercise patience, the lover is predominantly impetuous. So also in the case. Anton demands his father's will. Cousin Wend evades. When Anton doesn't give up, Wend lies that old Ruster was in debt and made his cousin the owner of the considerable property. Wend's next lie: The will is in Villach . Anton marries Ottel. After seven months a baby girl is born. Anton insists on his rights. The will must be made. After a duel with his cousin, Anton takes the will that Wend had in custody. The truth is coming out. The father had only awarded the cousin a legacy of 3,000 guilders. The rest belongs to Anton. The rightful owner chases the wrong cousin from the farm and moves in with the small family. The next morning, the Rusterhof is in ruins. A servant reports on his observation. On the eve of the fire, Wend snuck around the Rusterhof. Four weeks after the fire disaster, Anton sells his land. He takes a job as a chamois hunter and moves into the above-mentioned hunting lodge with the family.

Several years later, pilgrims pass the hunting lodge and have to leave one of their own on the mountain. It's cousin Wend. Anton picks up the man who is bleeding profusely from his mouth. The cousin ends up in Anton's bed. “Anton, Anton!” Groans the sick man. The gem hunter interrupts him: “I know what you mean.” Anton forgives. Then later, out on the prowl alone in the wide corridor, a burden falls from the hunter: He has put the years of hatred behind him; is through.
