Jumping through the basket was an honorary penalty in the 17th century in the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg . The name is derived from the phrase give someone a basket .

Details

Anyone found guilty of a minor offense, particularly a minor theft , had to jump into the water through a wide, bottomless basket. Immediately afterwards it was pulled out again. The primary purpose of the punishment was to shame the delinquent .

Others

The method of punishment was discussed in episode 73 ( Pat in the basket ) of the comic book Pat's Travel Adventure , but here it was moved to the 19th century .
