The Durnholzer See (Italian: Lago di Valdurna ) is a small mountain lake at the end of the Durnholzer Valley in the Sarntal Alps in South Tyrol . The lake has the shape of a triangle and is 900 meters long and 350 meters wide. It is fed by Seebach and Großalmbach as well as some springs on the lake bottom, the water flows over the Durnholzer Bach, which flows into the Talfer . The water temperature of the lake is too cold for use as a bathing lake.
The lake is classified as oligotrophic , so it contains few nutrients and low organic production. Due to the low buffering capacity, acidification of the water due to precipitation cannot be ruled out. The two above-ground tributaries ensure a high water exchange. There are extensive populations of higher aquatic plants.
The lake was probably created by a landslide on the northwestern side of the valley. This dammed the Durnholz brook. This emergence is supported by the fact that the lake runoff behind the locking bar of the lake has a fairly steep gradient and flows down through blocks and boulders.
