history

The history of the Dustin House has not been conclusively clarified. Many historians associate the house with the Duston family (alternative spelling: Dustin). Hannah Duston (1657–1736), who lived with her family in Haverhill, is considered a colonial heroine in the region. During the King William's War , the city was raided by Indians in 1697, while Hannah Duston was kidnapped; however, she was later able to free herself from the violence of the Indians and return to Haverhill. According to historical lore, Hannah Duston was kidnapped at the same time as she was building what is now Dustin House with her husband Thomas Duston.

According to other research, Dustin House was never the residence of the Hannah Duston family, but was built and inhabited by the Kimball family. The property was bought by the Dustin Family Association in 1946 and restored with the advice of architect Frank Chouteaux Brown.
