Dutse is the capital of the Nigerian state of Jigawa and is located in the north of Nigeria. According to a calculation from 2012, the city has 39,265 inhabitants. This makes it the fourth largest city in Jigawa after Hadejia , Gumel and Birnin Kudu .

The hilly area around Dutse is covered by savannah . Dutse became the capital of the newly established state of Jigawa on December 12, 1991.

Dutse and its surroundings form one of the 27 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state of Jigawa with an area of ​​1099.15 km². At the last census in 1991 the LGA had 138,452 inhabitants and thus a population density of 126 inhabitants per km².
