In East Frisia, dike workers or dyke residents are called Dykster . The place name accordingly means houses of the dike residents or dyke workers .

history

The former Dyksterhusen oil rig

The place is first mentioned in documents as Dicksterhausen in 1735 . Originally, the place was a settlement of workers (including the eponymous dike workers), warf people with small agriculture and mudflat fishermen and water game hunters. Some residential areas are significantly older. For example two farms in the middle and in the south of Dyksterhusen and other houses that stand on small warps. The three Aussiedlerhöfe on the new street along the Wymeerster Sieltief are more recent.

The February flood of 1962 caused severe damage to the Dollard dike west of Pogum. As a result, the dyke line was relocated and the dyke reinforced. In the course of the construction work, the northern part of Dyksterhusen was abandoned and a new settlement was created for the residents to the south.

In the Dollart in front of Dyksterhusen there is a raised platform on which test drilling for natural gas was carried out in 1964. A gas deposit was discovered. Its exploitation, however, was considered uneconomical. After the derrick was dismantled, the former platform is now used as a swimming area.
