Dynamite Island is a small, low and rocky island off the Fallières coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . In the Back Bay it is located 160 m east of Stonington Island .
Scientists from the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) carried out the first measurements . The name made at that time as Petrel Island did not prevail because of the duplication of the name with islands of the same name (see Pétrel Island and Petrel Island ). The American polar explorer Finn Ronne gave her its current name as part of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948). It was named after the fact that a passage in the sea ice had to be blasted with dynamite for the ship Port of Beaumont, Texas in order to get to the east side of the island.
