Dysnectes brevis is a protist species that belongs to the group of Carpediemonas-like organisms of the Fornicata and is the only representative of its genus. The species was first described in 2007 based on collections from the port of Yamakawa .
features
Dysnectes brevis is semicircular to oblong in shape, 9 to 14.5 micrometers long and 4.5 to 8 micrometers wide. It has two flagella and a furrow on the side. The front flagella actively moves along the left side of the cell. The short, posterior flagella is bilobed and beats within the furrow. The anterior root arises from the basal body .
Dysnectes brevis has a predatory lifestyle. It is usually attached to the substrate , but occasionally it slides or floats.
Systematics
The species was first described in 2007 by a Japanese research group based on collections from the port of Yamakawa . Dysnectes brevis is the only species in its genus. His bad swimming skills have led to his name, Dysnectes means "bad swimmer".
It was described as the most basic taxon of the Fornicata and understood as incertae sedis for several years . In the meantime, however, it is placed together with the genus Carpediemonas and several newly discovered genera in the formally undescribed group of Carpediemonas-like organisms .
