Four central characteristics for starting a business in the net economy can be identified , also as points of difference to the start-up situation in the real economy :

  • Start-up type: A start-up in this area is usually an independent, original and innovative company start-up within the net economy.
  • Start-up environment: The start-up is characterized by enormous growth potential with simultaneous uncertainty about future developments with regard to the actual success of capital-intensive information technology .
  • Relation to start-up: The start-up is based on a business idea that is made possible through the use of innovative information technology and that takes into account the special importance of the competitive factor information within the network economy .
  • Founding basis: The corporate concept is based in particular on electronic value creation for the customer, which is offered via an electronic platform of the Net Economy and requires constant further development and support.

In the center of a company in the e-Entrepreneurship is the electronic value chain : The electronic value chain can be divided a company of Net Economy ( E-Venture ) in strategically relevant activities to understand by cost behavior as well as existing and potential differentiation sources. The electronic value chain represents corresponding value activities that relate, for example, to the collection, systematisation and distribution of information .

These specific value activities within digital data networks then result in an electronic information product, for the value of which the customer is willing to pay via the associated added value. The electronic value chain thus shows the total value, which is composed of individual electronic value activities and profit margin. Within the value chain, the value activities that are particularly relevant for value creation are now identified. The new dimension of information as an independent source of competitive advantages means that electronic value-added activities can arise in digital data networks independently of the physical value chain . However, these electronic value creation activities are not comparable to physical value activities, but lie in the special handling of information. The corresponding value activities can for example lie in the collection, systematisation, selection, assembly and distribution of information. Through these specific value creation activities within digital data networks, an "electronic value chain " is manifested , the origin and effect of which can only be found in the net economy . The result is innovative business ideas based on this new level of added value that create an "electronic product" through the use of the various platforms, for whose value the customer is willing to pay. This product can then also be the basis for starting a company in the Net Economy. The specialty of these e-ventures is that the value of this product (electronic added value) can only be developed and sold using electronic media.
