eCos (abbreviation of English embedded configurable operating system ) is a free real-time operating system for embedded systems , which by the GNU open source is supported -Entwicklungssysteme. The eCos license allows developers full access to all parts of the eCos code and thus enables free further development of the system.

As is usual with real-time operating systems, eCos does not offer a development environment, but requires the installation of development tools on a Windows or Linux system. The development environment includes at least the GCC compiler , the gdb debugger and the binutils .

One of the strengths of eCos is its configuration system, which enables the user to put together their own slim, application-specific system in which only the required functions are integrated ( scalability , ...). This approach is very beneficial for low-resource embedded systems.

With the support of a large number of users, eCos has been continuously developed and is available for a growing number of platforms. The current version eCos 3.0 supports the processor architectures ARM , Hitachi H8300, Intel x86 , MIPS , Matsushita AM3x, Motorola 68k , PowerPC , SuperH , SPARC , NEC V8xx, OpenRISC and Nios II as target system .
