The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer is a non-profit organization for studies on cancer therapy , which is based in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert / Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe , Brussels .

In Europe, the EORTC is one of the most important organizations in the field of research-based oncology .

Structure of the EORTC

In the EORTC, a total of 17 international and interdisciplinary working groups conduct joint therapy studies. The organization is known for its high quality standards and the scientific reputation it gives rise to. It is the only institution in Europe in the field of oncology whose treatment data are also accepted by the FDA in the USA for the approval of drugs .

The National Cancer Institute of the USA has supported the analysis center in Brussels since 1974 and maintains the only foreign branch in the EORTC building.

The EORTC network comprises around 2500 members from over 300 different European institutions. Essentially surgeons, oncologists, radiation therapists, immunologists and specialists from other disciplines who all work on a voluntary basis.

purpose

The purpose is to improve the standards of cancer treatment in Europe through the development of new drugs and more effective therapy strategies.

The execution, development, coordination and stimulation of clinical research in Europe in order to improve the treatment of cancer and thus achieve an extension of the survival time and the quality of life for the patient.

With its work, the organization supports the transition of the results of clinical research into everyday therapy standards and thus prevents time delays for the patient when using new therapies.

In addition to applied research, the organization also deals with the computerized management of clinical, economic, legal, statistical and methodological data, as well as information about the quality of life of cancer patients.

history

The EORTC was founded in 1962 as a private initiative of some oncologists.

Others

EORTC has 135 employees at its Brussels headquarters and has its own foundation chaired by the Queen of Sweden. This foundation is supported by many European organizations that aim to fight cancer, the European Commission , private donors and the pharmaceutical industry . The pharmaceutical industry uses the EORTC to evaluate new drugs.

The EORTC conducts around 100 clinical studies with around 6500 patients per year.
