The EU Nickel Directive , also known as the Nickel Directive (Directive 94/27 / EC), was a regulation of the European Parliament to limit the use of nickel and other dangerous substances in certain objects that come into direct and prolonged contact with human skin. It changed Directive 76/769 / EEC, which was later replaced by the REACH regulation that applies today .

Come into effect

Following a decision by the European Parliament, the Nickel Directive came into force on June 30, 1994 .

reason

The main impetus for the nickel guideline was the increasing prevalence of a nickel allergy in the form of allergic contact eczema , triggered by the use of nickel in costume jewelry, piercings or watch straps as well as buttons and zippers on items of clothing. This problem should be contained by a limit value of 0.5 μg / cm² / week, which is stipulated in the directive.

German law

The European Nickel Directive was implemented in German law with an adaptation of the Consumer Goods Ordinance (BedGgstV).
