Eagle band

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eagle Band (also Eagle Brass Band ) was a band from the early days of New Orleans Jazz . It was created in 1907 when the trombonist Frankie Dusen took over the band of the demented Buddy Bolden . It took its name from the Eagle Saloon on the corner of Perdido and South Rampart Street in the Back O'Town area of New Orleans , where Buddy Bolden and the band played. She also played in the Lincoln Park amusement park . Dusen practically led the band before (albeit not officially) and fired the unreliable and forgetful, considered violent Buddy Bolden after he failed to appear at a gig outside of Mobile, Alabama , the final impetus after a long line of unpopular ones Incidents.

The band existed until 1917 when Dusen went to Los Angeles with some other members to play with Jelly Roll Morton . They split up with Morton soon afterwards in an argument, and Dusen then formed another band. The Eagle Band was very popular in New Orleans between 1907 and 1917. Their repertoire and style remained stuck to that of their time under Buddy Bolden, who remained present to younger musicians even after his retirement in 1907, and after Sidney Bechet in New Orleans they were unique in the slow game of the blues . The band never recorded.

Many later famous jazz musicians played at times in the Eagle Band, including:

The star trumpeter Bolden initially replaced Tig Chambers, from 1910 Bunk Johnson and from 1914 Buddy Petit.

The line-up of the band usually consisted of six musicians, in 1916 for example Frankie Dusen trombone, Buddy Petit trumpet, Big Eye Nelson clarinet, Chinee Foster drums, Lorenzo Staulz guitar, Dandy Lewis double bass. They played at dance events and as a marching band .

There was an Eagle Band previously in New Orleans in the 1890s, but it had nothing to do with von Dusen.
