Ed Garland

Ed Garland (* as Edward Betram Garland on January 9, 1895 in New Orleans , † January 22, 1980 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz bassist of New Orleans jazz . He played with Freddie Keppard , King Oliver and Kid Ory .

Edward Garland was called "Ed Garland" and sometimes "Montudie Garland". Around 1910 he played bass drum and tuba in brass bands, such as Frankie Duson's Eagle Band . He also worked in the Excelsior Brass Band and Manuel Perez's Imperial Orchestra . He played in the early bands of New Orleans jazz , then went to Chicago , where he played with Emmanuel Perez , Freddie Keppard , Lawrence Duhé , Joe "King" Oliver and others. In 1921 he followed "King" Oliver to California , where he continued to live. In 1944 he reappeared during the "Revival Era" of traditional jazz and was a member of Kid Ory's band , recording records with him and appearing on radio broadcasts. In 1957 he visited Europe with him; he also worked with Earl Hines , Turk Murphy and other musicians in California.
