action

The 17-year-old Lena from Weimar is about to graduate from secondary school in a deep phase of self-discovery and indecision: She refuses to do anything she doesn't want, but doesn't know what she really wants either. Her father Friedrich, a trained bridge construction engineer, lost his job a few years ago. Her mother Karla - also an engineer - has a job, but one that is less paid than before. Both mother and daughter suffer from the indifference of the silent father, who cannot bring himself to look for a new job. The oppressive silence in the family home is often only interrupted by Friedrich's questions to his daughter about what she wants to be one day, to which Lena always replies that she doesn't know yet and that she doesn't want to be pushed into anything.

At a concert, Lena sees a drummer who works her instrument like crazy. After that, Lena knows what she wants to do: She wants to learn and play the drums. Her two friends Alex, Klara and she have long wanted to start a rock band, but neither of them can play an instrument. Carried by her desire to become a drummer, Lena cheats her way to the music college and gets to know a lecturer there who recognizes her talent and promotes her.

Reviews

“The authentically played and told coming-of-age story is carried entirely by the charismatic leading actress. The film sometimes suffers from the somewhat immature script, but especially on the music track it hits the lifestyle of young people and shows hopeful approaches to great entertainment cinema with unobtrusive depth. "

“A young woman and her search for meaning and herself: Completely unsmooth, hooked to the point of no-longer-possible, well-distributed as well as plugging in. It comes across as relaxed atmosphere, has a lot of sympathy taste, because the 'brat' is conveyed by the 24-year-old feature film debutante Elinor Lüdde in a very exciting and 'restless' way. That she has been with a women's band called 'sleazy inc. operated 'on the drums, of course, benefits her. A charismatic unrest talent reminiscent of Franka Potente. If you (gladly) ignore the typical first-time directing tastes, you are faced with an astonishingly natural and pleasantly entertaining German teen cinema of the (much) better kind. "

“A girl is fighting for her self-determination. There have been many coming-of-age films by directors who are just finishing high school. That is not particularly surprising, because these debutants also like to write their own script. Their own youth is closest and still raises the most questions. Hagen Keller is also a man of conviction. MEER IS NICH is his graduation film at the HFF, the film academy in Munich, and Keller also wrote the book himself. Nonetheless, his debut is pleasantly different from many other works with similar intent. This may be due to the fact that Hagen Keller is no longer that young (born in 1968) and that before he went to film school he was already working as a waiter, driver, librarian, stoker, nurse, construction assistant, carpenter and photographer. That creates a positive distance to one's own navel gaze. Keller looks closely. So he sees that the sun shines in the prefabricated housing estates of the former GDR in summer and he shows it. The viewer encounters flowering meadows, but there is still unemployment and disorientation. The story itself could actually take place anywhere in Germany. Lena is 17, almost finished school and everyone has patent remedies for her on how to live her future life. But she doesn't want to be planned, she doesn't like to end up like her parents and rebels - for the time being with loud music. (...) Elinor Lüdde has taken on the main role of Lena. She embodies the rebellious drummer convincingly and with sincerity and was awarded the Bavarian Film Prize as the best young actress. MEER IS NICH has the idiosyncrasy and lightness that a film about growing up should have. It not only entertains, but also encourages you to take your own life into your own hands, even if this is of course not always easy. "

- Nana ATRebhan in arte tv from March 26, 2008

“'Meer is nich' is a film about indecision. With actress Elinor Lüdde, the film has a convincing center, you buy your defiance after a few seconds. And because the actresses of the three friends play together in a band called sleazy.inc.operated, the musical side of the film is also very authentic. "

- Frank Arnold in the Hamburger Abendblatt from March 27, 2008

“The feature film debut by director Hagen Keller is a really successful film about growing up in Germany. About aimlessness, not letting yourself be bent and the beauty of summer when you really feel life. Incredibly authentically, the film shows the dreams and longings of the young people and their separation from their parents. The sensational discovery of this year is clearly Elinor Lüdde, who plays the role of Lena so vividly that you almost believe yourself to be in a documentary. A wonderful film for everyone who can still remember the struggles of puberty or maybe even just fighting it - and for all lovers of drum solos and festivals. "

- Anne Kathrin Reiter in Focus from March 26, 2008

“As authentically as Elinor Lüdde is able to convey the attitude towards life of 17-year-olds in her role [...], Lena's late adolescent refusal to refuse will strain the older viewer in the long run. Everyone had a lot of anger in their stomach and a lot of dreams in their heads when they were growing up, and that alone is not enough material for a film. It would be necessary to take a look into the protagonist's very own, individual interior, who finds something special in general. However, Hagen Keller's first feature film still lacks this. "

- Leni Höllerer in the Berliner Morgenpost on March 27, 2008

Awards

Elinor Lüdde received an award for best young actress at the Bavarian Film Prize 2008 for her role as Lena.
