Ealdred II (Bamburgh)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ealdred II (* between 995 and 1007; † murdered 1038 ) was Earl of Bernicia with the residence of Bamburgh Castle from 1020/25. He was a son of Uhtred , Earl of Northumbria , who was murdered by Thurbrand the Hold in 1016 with the acquiescence of Canute the Great . Ealdred's mother was Ecgfrida, daughter of Bishop Aldhun of Durham .

Ealdred succeeded his uncle Eadwulf Cudel as Earl of Bernicia in 1020/25, and some time later, probably in the mid-1020s, killed Thurbrand in revenge for his father's death. In 1038, Ealdred was murdered by Thurbrand's son Carl in return. His brother Eadwulf succeeded him. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle claims that Eadwulf was "betrayed" in 1041 by King Harthacnut. The "betrayal" appears to have been carried out by Siward, Earl of Northumbria ; if the Libellus de exordio and other sources write of the same event, they say that Siward attacked and killed Eadulf. Siward became Count of all Northumbria, probably the first since Uhtred.

Ealdred's daughter Ealdgyth was married to Ligulf , who was murdered in 1080. Ealdred's daughter Aelfflaed was Siward's first wife and her son (Ealdred's grandson) was Waltheof II, Earl of Northumbria .
