Earl Silbert

Earl J. Silbert (born March 8, 1936 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American lawyer . He was, along with two other public prosecutors, chief prosecutor in the criminal proceedings against the five burglars into the headquarters of the American Democratic Party in the Watergate Hotel . His investigation was the starting point for what is now known as the Watergate Affair .

Life

Earl Silbert was born in Boston on March 8, 1936, as the middle child of two sisters. His father was also a lawyer and was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1921/22 .

He began his education at Harvard College in Cambridge , Massachusetts , where he received his Bachelor of Arts ("cum laude") in 1957 . He then continued his law studies at Harvard Law School, where he received his Master of Laws ("cum laude") in 1960 .

From 1960 he worked in the United States Department of Justice, first in the tax division, later in the department of the United States Attorney's Offices. In 1974 he was appointed a United States Attorney himself . In this capacity, he led the investigation into the five burglars in the party headquarters of the Democratic Party. Siebert suspected a special background for the break-in due to the special circumstances. He therefore transferred the further investigations to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In connection with the initial investigation, it became known that the burglary was commissioned and financed by the Committee for the Re-election of the President .

Since July 1979 he has been working for the law firm DLA Piper LLP, of which he is now a partner.

Awards

In 2009, Silbert received the Justice Potter Stewart Award for his efforts as a prosecutor and private attorney to improve the justice system.
