Earl of Bath
Earl of Bath was a hereditary British title of nobility awarded three times in the Peerage of England and once each in the Peerage of Great Britain and Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Awards
The title was first created on January 6, 1486 in the Peerage of England for Philibert de Chandée . The title probably expired on his death.
On July 9, 1536, the title was recreated in the Peerage of England for John Bourchier . The title expired on the death of his great-grandson, the 5th Earl, on August 16, 1654.
The third bestowal of the title was created on April 20, 1661 in the Peerage of England for the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall and Devonshire, John Granville . Along with the earliest dignity, he was awarded the subordinate titles Viscount Granville , of Lansdown, and Baron Granville , of Kilkhampton and Bideford. The titles expired on the death of his grandson, the 3rd Earl, on May 17, 1711.
On July 14, 1742, the House of Commons William Pulteney was raised in the Peerage of Great Britain to Earl of Bath, in the County of Somerset . Along with the Earldom, he was awarded the subordinate titles Viscount Pulteney , of Wrington in the County of Somerset, and Baron Pulteney , of Hedon in the County of York . Since his only son died unmarried and childless in 1763, the titles expired on his death on July 8, 1764.
In the fifth bestowal on October 26, 1803, the title of Countess of Bath , in the County of Somerset, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom was bestowed on Laura Pulteney, 1st Baroness Bath , a great-grandniece of the Earl's fourth bestowal. She had already been raised to Baroness Bath , of Bath in the County of Somerset, in the Peerage of Great Britain on July 26, 1792 . The titles expired when she died childless on July 14, 1808.
