Earl of Desart
Earl of Desart was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .
Award and history of the title
The title was created on December 20, 1793 for Otway Cuffe, 1st Viscount Desart . Together with the Earldom he was given the subordinate title Viscount Castlecuffe . As early as January 6, 1781, he was raised in the Peerage of Ireland to Viscount Desart , in the County of Kilkenny . In addition, he had inherited the title of Baron Desart , in the County of Kilkenny, from his brother in 1767 , which had been awarded to his father on November 10, 1733 in the Peerage of Ireland.
The great-grandson of the first earl, Hamilton Cuffe, 5th Earl of Desart , was also given the title of Baron Desart , of Desart in the County of Kilkenny, on May 12, 1909 . This title belonged to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, unlike the Irish titles, was associated with a seat in the House of Lords . Since the 5th Earl left no male descendants, all named titles expired on his death on November 4, 1934.
The family seat of the Earls was Desart Court ( Irish Cúirt an Dísirt ) in County Kilkenny. The property burned down in 1920 as a result of an IRA attack .
