Earl of Iddesleigh , in the County of Devon , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The title of the Earldom is pronounced "Idsly", the family name "Northcut".

The Earls' family home is Shillands House in Upton Pyne Hill near Exeter in Devon.

Award and subordinate titles

The title was created on July 3, 1885 for the conservative politician Sir Stafford Northcote, 8th Baronet . He had held various government offices, including Chancellor of the Exchequer , First Lord of the Treasury and Secretary of State . Along with the earliest dignity, he was given the subordinate title Viscount St Cyres , of Newton Saint Cyres in the County of Devon. This title, which also belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom, serves as a courtesy title to the respective title heir .

As early as 1851, the first earl had inherited the subordinate title of Baronet , of Haine in the County of Devon, which was bestowed on his ancestor, long-time MP John Northcote , on July 16, 1641 in the Baronetage of England .
