Earl of Mount Edgcumbe is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Great Britain carried by the head of the Edgcumbe family .

Until 1987, the Earls' family seat was Mount Edgcumbe House near Plymouth in Cornwall .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was bestowed on August 31, 1789 to the admiral and politician George Edgcumbe, 1st Viscount Mount Edgcumbe and Valletort . In 1761 he had inherited the title Baron Edgcumbe , of Mount Edgcumbe in the County of Devon, from his brother, which had been bestowed on his father on April 20, 1742. In addition, he had already been raised to Viscount Mount Edgcumbe and Valletort on March 5, 1781 . The eldest son of the incumbent earl uses the latter as a courtesy title .

The alleged heir to the title ( Heir Presumptive ) is the older half-brother of the current title holder, Hon. Piers Valletort Edgcumbe (* 1946).
