Earl of Sefton was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

The Earls' family residences were Abbeystead House in Abbeystead and Croxteth Hall in Liverpool , both in Lancashire .

Bestowal, subordinate titles, and expiry

The title was created on November 30, 1771 for the British MP Charles Molyneux, 8th Viscount Molyneux . Already in 1759 he had inherited the title Viscount Molyneux , of Maryborough in the Queen's County , from his uncle , which was created on December 22, 1628 for his great-great-grandfather, the English MP Sir Richard Molyneux, 2nd Baronet , and the title Baronet , Sefton in the County of Lancaster , who was bestowed on May 22, 1611 in the Baronetage of England, whose father of the same name Sir Richard Molyneux (1560-1622). The award of the Viscountcy and the Earldom took place in the Peerage of Ireland, so that the membership of the entrusted in the English or British House of Commons was not affected. It was not until the 2nd Earl, who inherited the title from his father in 1795 and who was also a British Member of the House of Commons from 1816, was given the title of Baron Sefton , of Croxteth in the County of Lancaster, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on June 20, 1831 , awarded, whereby he resigned from the House of Commons and received a seat in the British House of Lords . All of the named titles finally expired with the childless death of his great-great-great-grandson, the 7th Earl, on April 13, 1972.
